[Podcast]

About a year ago, I started to formulate some kind of venture in my own philosophical practice. “Somatic philosophy.” The wisdom of the body. The body as a path to wisdom; the body as a language of wisdom … How to learn how to speak it.

I had read books like The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, and The Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller, and Character Styles by Stephen Johnson, and I remember very clearly when I finally overcame my aversion to group workout and went to classes of yoga and Pilates at my gym. “It’s like meditation – with the body”, I thought. Why on earth have I put this off for so long.

(I also thought: the trick is to do what they say. If they say, sit like this and let your roots go down through the floor and the ceiling below – do it. Obey. The effect is remarkable. Suspend your disbelief.)

So,

This is a recording of when I invited Patricia Vane, Master’s student at the Högskolan för Scen och Musik (the Academy of Music and Drama) here in Göteborg, over to my place for a session of ‘body practices’ – whatever that is.

For this recording, we suspended our disbelief about seeing the body as a way to wisdom, and attempted to listen politely and patiently, giving the benefit of the doubt, aiming for clarity of vision and steering clear of distortions.

I didn’t know what to expect before Patricia turned up. In fact, I don’t have much of a plan at all with this entire project. I’m not sure what I’m aiming for. I don’t have a conclusion that I’m working to prove. As I’m writing these words now, I’m wondering … I’m sensing … well. I want to continue. And I hope you join us.
